Healthy hair looks and feels thick, soft and shiny. Having silky hair is not, unfortunately, something that everyone is just naturally born with. Some people have hair that becomes dry and brittle which can depend on their diet, or using hair products that are not meant for their hair type.

When you have hair that doesn’t look healthy or it cannot retain the moisture from the natural oils from the scalp, it will become dry and rough to the touch. These are some changes you can make with your lifestyle and hair routine that can help you transform your hair into hair that is soft and silky.

You should choose hair care products that are made for your hair type. Make sure you understand the type of hair you have and focus on that when you are shopping for hair products like shampoo and conditioner. The formulation of every hair care product is designed with a certain hair type in mind. This can be oily, dry or damaged hair, and there are also other categories that can be more specific, like dyed.

Another big tip is to not shampoo your hair daily. Shampooing your hair every day will strip away important oil from your hair. Instead, you should only shampoo your hair twice or three times per week. If you have very oily hair, then you can try using dry shampoos instead. Shampoo only the scalp of your hair, not the tips.

Never forget to apply conditioner after you shampoo and keep it on your hair for 2 to 5 minutes. Wash it off after that. Use conditioner only on the tips of your hair, not the scalp or entire length of your hair. Conditioners are used to help lock in moisture. It can also help reduce the static electricity in the hair strands and can even give you a low level of sun protection.

You can also oil your hair regularly if you have dry hair, you should not wash it without oiling it first at least for an hour before you shampoo. You can use any healthy-hair oil like coconut oil, olive oil, almond oil or argan oil. Massage your scalp with oil, this is especially good for those who have a dry scalp. If you have an oily scalp, then apply hair oil only to the strands and ends and try to avoid getting any on the roots of your hair.

You can also make good use of hair masks once a week to help you retain the natural oils found in your hair. Apply any homemade hair masks below and keep it on for an hour then wash it off using a shampoo, then apply conditioner to your hair.

  • Egg yold and avocados
  • Bananas and avocados
  • Aloe vera gel

You also shouldn’t wash your hair using very hot water. Hot water on your scalp will dry it out. You could wash it with lukewarm water or cold water. Rinse off your conditioner using cool water. After you condition, end your hair wash by rinsing off the conditioner using the coldest water you can handle.
